Who’s the Party For? Unpacking Celebrations in Early Childhood
Presented by

Celebrations are part of everyday life in early childhood.
Birthdays. Cultural events. End-of-year gatherings.
They can be joyful, connecting, and full of meaning.
But they can also unintentionally exclude.
They can reflect adult assumptions.
They can overlook the voices and experiences of the children and families they’re meant to honour.
So it’s worth asking the question.
Who is the celebration really for?
As part of our Social Justice project, we began to look more closely at our own practices. Not just what we were doing, but why.
Through ongoing critical reflection, and honest conversations with families each year, we started to notice patterns. Moments where inclusion wasn’t as strong as we thought. Times where children’s voices weren’t as present as they could be.
And that led to change.
We began to rethink what a celebration could look like.
We shifted our focus toward approaches that place the child at the centre.
We made space for diverse family experiences, perspectives, and choices.
In this webinar, we share that journey. The highlights, the challenges, and the learning that continues to shape our practice.
Together, we’ll explore practical ways to:
-
reflect on who your celebrations are designed for
-
include children’s voices in meaningful, authentic ways
-
recognise and respect the diversity within your community
-
design celebrations that support agency, belonging, and equity
This isn’t about doing more.
It’s about being more intentional, so celebrations become moments where every child and every family feels seen, respected, and genuinely included.
