Event Description
Unpacking ‘Slow Pedagogy’…slowly
Presented by
Philip Butler

Slow pedagogy isn’t about dragging things out or doing less—it is about finding balance.
It is about recognising when a moment needs more time, deeper attention, or fewer interruptions… and when it is right to move forward with clarity and momentum.
At its heart, slow pedagogy invites us to resist the constant pressure to rush and instead create space for intentional, responsive and child-centred teaching.
Across the day, you’ll be challenged to rethink what ‘quality pedagogy’ really looks like in practice. You’ll leave feeling inspired to advocate for a more thoughtful pace, more meaningful interactions, and environments where children’s learning (and educator wellbeing) can truly flourish.
What the day will include:
The workshop is divided into two engaging parts:
Morning Session Part One: The thinking behind slow pedagogy
We’ll explore where slow pedagogy has emerged from, what it responds to, and what it offers educators today—both philosophically and practically.
Afternoon Part Two: Slow pedagogy in everyday practice
We will bring the ideas of slow pedagogy to life, applying the pedagogy to real-world areas of practice, including but not limited to:
- Documentation and assessment (capturing what matters, not just what’s measurable)
- Learning environments (designing spaces that invite deeper engagement)
- Supporting children’s behaviour (responding with calm, presence and purpose)
Whether you’re new to the concept or already curious about how to slow things down without losing direction, this workshop will offer practical strategies, powerful reflection, and a renewed sense of permission to teach with intention.
