Event Description
The Art versus Craft Debate
Presented by
Dr Gai Lindsay

This thought provoking webinar invites educators to examine the long running debate between art and craft in early childhood education and care. With examples drawn from practice, we will explore how educator beliefs, confidence, and everyday decisions shape the quality of children’s visual art experiences. Participants will unpack tensions between process and product, open ended art and structured craft, and consider how these choices influence children’s creativity, rights, and learning. Through reflective dialogue, you will be introduced to a continuum of visual art practice as a tool for evaluating and strengthening pedagogy. Rather than fuelling conflict, this workshop encourages respectful discussion, insight, and growth. Join us to challenge assumptions, ignite curiosity, and expand your capacity to offer rich and meaningful visual art experiences for young children.
Strengthen your practice by learning to:
• Reflect on art and craft choices in ways that honour children’s creativity and rights.
• Move beyond fixed mindsets to design meaningful and open ended visual art experiences.
• Use a visual art continuum to evaluate and enhance everyday pedagogy.
