Event Description
Connecting Literacy and the Arts
Presented by
Dr Gai Lindsay

Literacy in early childhood is far more than spoken and written language. Children communicate through drawing, painting, movement, drama, music, and digital tools, using visual languages to share ideas long before they write them. This webinar explores how the arts can deepen literacy learning by honouring children’s cultural and creative rights and offering meaningful ways to express thinking. We will unpack how to create art rich environments, plan intentional material encounters, and build educator confidence in visual arts practice. Grounded in the Early Years Learning Framework and contemporary research, this webinar invites educators to see children’s artistic expressions as purposeful acts of communication that strengthen creativity, cultural connection, and lifelong learning.
Strengthen your practice by learning to:
• Integrate visual arts into literacy learning with clarity and confidence.
• Create environments that support multimodal communication and cultural expression.
• Recognise children’s artistic work as intentional, communicative, and deeply meaningful.
