Event Description
Talking to Children about Aboriginal Culture
Presented by
Louise Cave, Anthony Semann

This webinar is for educators who want to speak with children about Aboriginal culture with confidence but worry about saying the wrong thing or oversimplifying. Children are curious, they ask big questions, and they deserve responses that honour truth, care, and cultural integrity. This webinar offers a clear and grounded approach to these conversations.
Across the session, you will explore how to introduce key ideas about culture and Country in age appropriate ways, respond to children’s questions with honesty, and avoid stereotypes or oversimplified explanations. You will engage with examples from real early learning settings, learn how to use books and stories thoughtfully, and consider how to draw on local community voices whenever possible. The session models language that supports respectful dialogue and addresses common misconceptions with care.
You can expect to strengthen your practice through:
• using clear and respectful language that supports children to understand Aboriginal culture and identity
• responding to children’s questions in ways that honour truth, community guidance, and cultural integrity
• creating everyday opportunities for meaningful dialogue through story, inquiry, and connection to local voices
This is conversation shaped by respect, accuracy, and genuine relationship.
