INSPIRE 2025: Early Bird Registrations Now Open

Rethinking ‘group times’ as contexts for learning and launchpads for inquiry Part 1

Presented by Stephen Gallen Transforming group time, make it a launch pad for inquiry and research with opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and participation

Description

'Group time' is an evergreen early childhood practice that has withstood the test of time, but what if we told you that it's time for a rethink about just what group times can be, who they're for, and what they can do? Instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, let's reimagine group times for different purposes.

We all know that you can cover a range of content in group times, but what if we use this as an opportunity to create broader contexts for learning that act as launchpads for inquiry and research? What if we use it as a strategy to build a group culture and create opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and participation? Imagine how this could transform our days and programs and how this might look in practice.

Completing Rethinking ‘group times’ as contexts for learning and launchpads for inquiry Part 1 may contribute one hour of PD that aligns with the NESA (NSW) criteria for Elective PD and addresses:

The Australian Professionals Standards for Teachers: APST 3: Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning

Early Years Learning Framework Learning Outcomes: Outcome 2: Children are connected and contribute to their world

The National Quality Standard: QA 1: Educational program and practice
