Presented by Ariel Liddicut
Description
This webinar examines the constructed nature of gender stereotypes and how they limit all children’s possibilities. Gender diversity is framed through a cultural and historical lens, demonstrating that society has not always considered gender to be binary. The relevance of gender diversity to the early childhood classroom is understood through statistics, guiding documents, and a multiple-spectrum model. We will explore the four forms of gender education to reflect upon our practice and move towards providing a more inclusive early education classroom. By creating early education spaces where children feel safe to express their authentic selves, we support children’s gendered development and reduce the oppression of those who defy the gender binary.
Completing Re-Applying a Gender Lens: Creating safe early childhood spaces where all children are free to be their authentic selves may contribute one hour of PD that aligns with the NESA (NSW) criteria for Elective PD and addresses:
The Australian Professionals Standards for Teachers: APST 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
Early Years Learning Framework Learning Outcomes: Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity
The National Quality Standard: QA 2: Children’s health and safety
