INSPIRE 2025: Early Bird Registrations Now Open

Professionalism in our sector; What’s the big whoop and is it worth it?

Description

Professional standards guide practice, interactions and relationships in an early childhood service. What are these professional standards, and what does being a professional mean?

In this highly feminised profession, we need to change community perception. We don’t just ‘wipe noses’ (Leyonhjelm, 2017) and ‘we are not just nice ladies’ (Stonehouse, 1994), and we don’t just ‘love’ children. We require a paradigm shift in every aspect of our work—our language, attitude, relationships, communications on social media and our advocacy for early childhood education.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand and embody the highest standards of professionalism underpinned by the revised Code of Ethics (2016) with children, families and the broader community
  • Approach difficult conversations with peers with confidence and clarity that supports a professional resolution
  • Present as professional in every aspect of our role

Completing Professionalism in our sector; What's the big whoop and is it worth it? will contribute one hour of PD addressing the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and aligns with NESA Elective PD.

NESA Elective PD criteria:

  • Job-embedded and provided opportunities for collaboration, transference and application
  • Involved opportunities to give and receive feedback and/or undertake self-reflection and reflection on the teaching practices of others
  • Research-based and evidence-based
