What if… what if we could use our imagination more rather than being trapped in a mindset that says, “we can’t” or “that’s not possible”. This limits our ability to dream and to create spaces and teaching moments that truly nourish ourselves and children. Early childhood spaces should be spaces that we dare only to dream about but then are bold enough to create for children. They should be places of hope and spaces of possibility.
If you ever find yourself limiting your practice, or have colleagues limiting your mindset, perhaps these questions might help:
Where have I said “we can’t” without fully exploring what might actually be possible?
What is one small risk I could take to move my practice forward?
If there were no constraints, what would I design or change for children in this space?
How can I respond to challenges with curiosity rather than certainty?
What would “brave practice” look like for me today, not later?
Am I choosing comfort over creativity, or the other way around?
Sometimes growth begins not with answers, but with the courage to ask better questions.
So, take some time out as we approach the end of the year and sit with your colleagues or post this question on a wall where you colleagues can respond to ‘If we could dream of one change that would bring more joy to our teaching and children’s learning in 2026 what would it be’
Remember when you limit yourself or allow others to limit us we rob ourselves of joy.
Our thanks to Tuntable Falls Preschool in Northern NSW for a day of absolute joy with the team, a place where ‘why not’ prevails over ‘we can’t’ and yes, the children go for a swim in the nearby river on a regular basis.
